Bee Identification

Are they honey bees?

1. Are they coming from a hole in the ground?
If so, you don’t have honeybees.

2. Are they Yellow and black?
Honeybees aren’t yellow, they’re brown.

3. The nest is grey and made of paper, I can’t see the combs.
Yellow Jackets.

4. The comb is hanging horizontally; I can see the “bees” crawling on the bottom.
These 
are paper wasps.

5. They are coming out from under the leaves at the base of my bushes.
Ground Hornets.

6. There are hundreds coming and going from a hole in my siding.
Good chance.

7. It’s August and now when I walk past my bush (fence, wall, and deck) I get stung. I didn't 
do anything.
Honeybees aren’t that aggressive. It’s probably wasps.

8. I can see the combs and they are hanging vertically from the tree limb, or I look in the 
hole in the tree or siding and see yellow combs with thousands of brown bees. The 
combs are hanging vertically.
Bingo, you’ve got honeybees.

9. There is a huge mass if bees building a nest in my tree. It’s the size of a football, and all I 
see is bees. Bingo you've got a swarm of bees.
Relax, they’ll move on and move into a 
tree or wall nearby in a few hours or days.
